Benjamin Earl Turner, HEADSPACE/BENT

Abteen Bagheri

It's a magical-realist gangster Hip Hop video about gang rivalry, life after death and friendship - what's not clicking? Anyways, come meet Habib.

This music video is a testament to how game-changing a collaboration between two artists can be when there’s complete trust and no record label over your shoulder. This time, having worked with Benjamin once before, Abteen was given the freedom to let his imagination run wild, and as it did, we were blessed with an existential gangster film featuring – naturally – a 9-foot AK-toting animatronic creature-sidekick named Habib.

To Abteen, animatronics wasn’t only a treasured piece of childhood, but an artefact of maybe the last golden age of Hollywood – a part of cinema lost, yet arguably more effective and valuable than its modern-day, computer-generated counterpart.

To bring this gentle giant to life, Abteen worked with Academy award-winning creature creator Alec Gillis – known for his work on Starship Troopers, Death Becomes Her and Jumanji.

Then, taking inspiration from Japanese yakuza films, Abteen created a fever dream crime story that he described in one sentence as “Big boss gets executed outside a Chinese restaurant and is escorted to the afterlife.”

The intention? To bring something new and exciting to the worlds of Hip Hop and music video- nothing more, nothing less.
